WHAT DIABETES IS NOT

Sitting on the subway this A.M., I noticed a billboard sign directly in front of me which was sponsored by the Epilepsy Society of Southern New York, It read:
"Epilepsy is about what we have..........Not who we are."

This same Wisdom should apply to those of us with T1DM as well.

I agree, now if we could just convinced the self-appointed group of doctors who claim to represent us PWD (persons with diabetes), the American Diabetes Association. I won't hold my breath waiting.

Scott.......Those of us with Vision and Wisdom are often seen by Groups such as the ADA and Physicians as unruly Participants that should not be heard or even seen.

i just saw the movie, Lorezo's Oil and how it reminded me of groups and people like the ADA, as well as Physicians who instead of representing the interests of people with Diabetes, end up representing their own and become completely antithetical to what a representative organiztion to T1DM should be about.

Yes, It happens that organizations like the American Diabetes Association just become beuracratic entities unto themselves.

Gosh Barry, I need to discard some old memories.

Back in the 70's, diet soda had only recently become available - the two signature flavors were Fresca and Tab. I lived in a rural community in central Minnesota, pop. 5000. The one grocery store in town stocked the soda sporadically.

I was waiting in the car while my mother picked up some things. I went in the store and heard her in the soda aisle, talking to the manager, "we've got a diabetic at home....". and I immediately saw myself as some poor deformed creature, kept in a dark room at the far end of the hall.......

Now, this was not my mom's fault - she was only trying to encourage the store to keep more diet pop on hand. But, thinking back to hearing her say those words still makes me cry......

I can only say this to you Kathy, that everything you have experienced regarding growing up with T1DM, I have also felt as I am sure many others out there as well.
I give you a warm Hug on this Winter night and say to you.......
I understand..............
